Our thoughts
D’Angelo’s untimely passing on October 14, 2025 drove millions to his critically-acclaimed catalog — one that is a masterclass in truly honoring one’s soul purpose. Having only released 3 albums over a 30-year career, some might call D’Angelo’s proof of work sparse. It’s important for those people to remember that the recipe for anything great in life, especially great art, is quality over quantity. Yes, 3 albums over that time span is a relatively small offering from a recording artist, particularly by today’s standards. However, when looking at how the quality of music has evolved since the classic projects of yesteryear, it can be generally agreed upon that we as a society have lost at least a part of that glimmer of what used to make albums special. A clear lack of real musicianship is likely the main culprit, but there is also a larger issue facing society... a lack of trying, which might be directly linked to a deeper lack of care. Voodoo was the result of years of soul-searching for D’Angelo. In the 5 years since his debut album, D’Angelo spent his time studying and working with the greats — a process that paid off by way of a classic album dripped in accolades that changed the course of R&B music forever. A commercial and critically-accalaimed hit, this album marked a notable change for D’Angelo, who struggled with the consequences of his work’s success. Society’s oversexualization of him, most notably due to the video for his song “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” and reinforced by the album’s marketing materials, pushed him away from the spotlight. A true music nerd, it was clear that he was happiest doing what he was born to do... simply creating. To D’Angelo, an undeniable legend and most importantly, an amazing human being: thank you for existing, and thank you for your art.
REST IN POWER.
