What is this place?

hennysoundlounge® is a passion project stemming from a deep, lifelong obsession with one of the greatest art forms to ever exist: music.

Every week, we shine a spotlight on one music project that we feel really excited about. It can (and will) be from any time period and/or genre. This is called the “Project of the Week”, or POTW for short. For each POTW, we offer a small write-up as a plea for everyone with a heartbeat to stop what they’re doing and give that project a try. Our dream is to expose as many people to as much music as possible.

So, you’re a music critic?

To be labeled a “critic” would imply that we are rating projects, which is not what we’re about.

hennysoundlounge® is a project of love. Understanding what it means to be an artist is valuing the level of bravery, vulnerability, and commitment that goes into releasing art into the world. HSL does not and will not ever exist to tear any artists down. In other words: there are no bad reviews here. We simply exist to share music that resonates with us and leave what doesn’t. HSL is one with the agreement at Henny Dream World that art in any form is a soul practice, and it deserves to be respected as such.

Can you feature my project?

It is our belief that art finds you whenever the universe sees fit.

While we love being exposed to new music, HSL thrives off of organic discoveries. Doing things this way has been our way of keeping a promise of authenticity to ourselves — a way for us to ensure our minds are clear enough to shine a light on projects we genuinely believe in. That being said, we’re also endlessly curious. We may or may not have an email address that we may or may not monitor… allegedly.

It’s also important to note: a lack of a feature doesn’t mean anything, really — in fact, there’s a 99.99% chance that the universe simply didn’t feel that we were ready to experience and/or appreciate it yet. We have faith that we’ll get to it eventually.

Why are you saying “project” instead of “album”?

Using the term “project” instead of “album” allows us to feature any full-length offering from any artist.

In the music industry, there are a lot of labels (no pun intended). Although it may be controversial to say, they do often serve a helpful purpose in that they assist the public in understanding the artists’ intent. Albums are planned, prepared, received, and ultimately critiqued differently than mixtapes, EP’s, playlists, etc.

Art in all forms is subjective and open to interpretation, but we feel that we should engage with art as it is presented out of respect for these artists who work so hard to share their light with us. So, yes, as far as HSL is concerned, there is a difference and it absolutely does matter..

As far as finding us iRL, for now we only exist in the dream world. However, if you wish really, really hard on a star, maybe — just maybe — the universe (our mailing list) will make sure you’re the first to know when the physical world welcomes us into her arms.
