Our thoughts
It took me a long time to get around to this album. I briefly tried a few times now — once about a year after it dropped (i didn’t understand it yet), another time this past summer (it started to click), and finally now (i fully get it now). Music is one of my favorite art forms because there is always something out there that you haven’t heard yet that you’ll really enjoy, and it truly does find you at the right moment. This is why i like to say: i let art find me when the universe sees fit, not based off of release dates.
I have heard of Dijon through the years. The first time i was introduced to him via a song called “Drunk”. In what would be a pre-cursor to my relationship with all of his music, that, too, had to grow on me — i didn’t get “it” upon the first listen. As my music taste (and maturity level) grew, so did my love for that song. Some would argue that the best music interacts with people that way. I personally believe that Dijon is the type of artist that you have to have an open, refined palette and a genuine admiration for music as an art form in order to truly appreciate. I don’t say that pretentiously in praise to myself for having some sort of haughty taste just because I’ve grown to love this album, but as an honest opinion on him as an artist. His passion and experimental approach to song structure and cadence can catch casual listeners off guard and defensive.
His ability to quickly jump from full-throated passion to soft, sensitive melodies is a testament to not only his talent & creativity, but also to his vocal power & endurance. He allows himself full vulnerability to throw himself into the feeling of the song in the way an actor throws themselves into their character. Side note: I’m always blown away by how artists describe random situations in song form. “Did You See It?” is a song so beautifully written about a UFO — like how?
