Happy 2025 everybody! HSL is back with yet another underrated project. I’m about 2.5 years late to this, but they say art finds you when you need it and I’m here to tell you that couldn’t be more true. The themes explored in this album are speaking to me specifically at this time in my life where i’m trying to breakthrough / access something better (aren’t we all?). Hearing music that validates my feelings is one of the best things in the world to me.

I first heard about Ariel J. sometime last year through their song “Glow88”. I really enjoy their spiritual / optimistic outlook on life expressed through their music, and i need encouraging words during this season of my life. A talented lyricist and vocalist, every song I’ve heard so far feels like a supportive arm around your shoulder as we all bear life’s ups & downs. I love finding music that relates to what i’m currently going through — although it may be obvious that no experience is unique to you as it has likely impacted some part of humanity before you, it still always blows my mind when i hear other people relate to my own thoughts / ideas / experiences.

I specifically related to this project’s themes of anti-capitalism, friendship / community, the process of chasing your dreams, spirituality, and church (i am a preacher’s kid). Virgin Mary Rd. especially spoke to me on many levels. What a beautiful exposé on growing up with so many intersecting identities — black, gay, woman, religious upbringing, artist, etc. Really a beautiful song and honestly the most impressive pen work on the album imo. Single-handedly solidified the power of their pen to me. I really hope the world for them, and as always, i love discovering art from fellow community members. 🏳️‍🌈
